Insanity – Cardio Recovery Part Four

Continuing our insanity workout reviews, this is phase 4 of the Cardio Cardio Recovery workout. The following points describe each exercise in this phase.

1. Quadriceps strengtheners

This one is fun, first put your hands, knees and toes on the ground, make sure that your core is straight, then bring both of your knees about 2.5 inches off the ground, then you make one leg straight in the air and do the same exercise of the pulses you did in the last phase. Repeat these exercises for 16 reps, don’t forget to keep your shoulders, wrist, legs all in one line.

After you complete this exercise rest in child’s pose (a Yoga stretch)

2. Oblique Work

Same position of the last exercise, but this time instead of doing pulses you try to bring your leg up to your chest as far as you can. Repeat this exercise for also 16 reps, and then go again into a child’s pose.

3. Table Top Balance Pose

The name of the workout really describes it; you balance on one leg and make the rest of your body horizontal like the top of a table.

I have a unique situation. I was a professional ice skater many years ago and was involved in a horrific car accident. My leg had to amputated. As you can imagine, this was devastating to me. I thought I’d spend my whole life skating and in one terrible moment, my career was gone. I was depressed for a long time and wanted to hide away. Eventually, I started working with a personal trainer who basically restored my spirit and faith in the world. Even though my leg is gone I can still do lots of things and be physically active. I just think that it is totally awesome that I have been able to get my body into the physical shape that I have been able to get it in. I am so happy that I have been able to do this great thing. After searching for so long for an effective workout, I finally found the one with Insanity workout. I have known about it since last year but I never really paid much attention to it because it could be just any other home workout out there and I’ve already spent a lot on those ineffective diets and DVD’s. I said I had enough.

So when I was told about this by a friend, I was not that enthusiastic. In fact, I was not even listening until I saw her abs. It was amazing. Table Balance

This is an invigorating pose that requires strength throughout your core and shoulders. By extending a leg, the forces acting upon the pose increase and the demands on your muscles increase as well.

Begin like table in a seated position with your knees bent, hands on the floor behind your back. The wrists can face either toward your toes, or away from the body. On an inhale lift the hips and thighs off the floor. Once you are fully lifted into your table top position, extend one leg forward. Foot flexed so your heel is in front of your toes.

Exhale to release the leg down. Inhale and switch legs. Exhale and release the leg. Inhale one last time in table and exhale to come down.

Plank

A great overall toning pose is plank. You strengthen your shoulders, arms, and entire core. You generate heat and work on stamina and endurance by holding and working this pose from the inside out.

Come onto all fours. Place your wrists under your shoulders. Tuck your toes under and straighten the legs. Make one straight line with your body from heels to the crown of your head. Make sure you do not sag into your lower back or lift your sit bones up and break that straight line. Use your legs as much as your arms. Lift your navel up toward your spine. Relax the chest, throat and face. Cultivate a sense of lightness deep within your solar plexus and low belly. Hold for 4-6 breathes or until your body tells you enough.

Come back onto your knees to release the pose.
